Head Gear in Mithila

Headgear plays a very culturally important role in Mithila and depicts dignity and culture. While multi-colored sarees and dhotis are included in the traditional attire in Mithila, the headwear sported by men and women adds that extra touch to the dress, especially on religious and ceremonial occasions.

Head Gear in Mithila
It comes in the form of 'Pagdi' or 'Paag', which is a type of turban or headdress for men. In fact, it is undisputedly a matter of pride and prestige to wear this traditional headdress in Mithila during weddings, religious functions, or even festivals. This forms one of the important identity elements and respect for stature in society, passed on through generations.

Paag is a cotton or silk cloth wrapped on the head in an special style. Even the color of the fabric used varies with the occasion. For example :

Red Paag: It is worn during wedding occasions and other festivals.

White Paag: Usually, it is used during some religious activities and events.

Yellow Paag: It is very joyful and used on happy occasions and during a few festivals.
In time, the Paag has grown to be a strong cultural icon of Mithila. In 2017, the "Mithila Paag" was accorded a GI tag, or in other words, a cultural artifact. One such movement for saving the tradition of wearing Paag is known as the 'Paag Bachao Abhiyan', and many wear the Paag proudly to keep alive the heritage of Mithila.
